K-Beauty FAQ: The 10 most common questions about Korean skincare

Korean skincare can look complicated at first: lots of steps, unfamiliar ingredients and new terms like essence, ampoule or PA++++. Here we answer the 10 most common questions about K-beauty – short, honest and with concrete product examples.

1. In which order do you apply Korean skincare?

The basic rule: from thin to thick. Watery textures go first, rich ones last – so every layer can absorb well.

  1. Cleanser (double cleanse in the evening, see question 3)
  2. Toner – preps the skin and adds first hydration
  3. Essence – a light, watery layer
  4. Serum or ampoule – concentrated actives
  5. Eye care (optional)
  6. Moisturizer – locks in hydration
  7. Sunscreen – always the last step in the morning

More in our guide Essence or toner.

2. Do I really have to do all 10 steps every day?

No. The famous 10-step routine is more of a toolkit than a rule. To start, 3–4 products are enough: a gentle cleanser, a serum, a moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning. You can add masks or essences step by step. More in K-beauty for beginners.

3. What is double cleansing and how does it work?

Double cleansing means cleansing twice in the evening:

  1. Oil-based cleanser (cleansing oil or balm) massaged onto dry skin – it dissolves sunscreen, make-up and excess sebum. Emulsify with a little water and rinse.
  2. Water-based cleanser (gel or foam) – removes the remaining residue.

In the morning a gentle cleanser is usually enough. The full guide: double cleansing done right.

4. What does snail mucin do for the skin?

Snail mucin (snail secretion filtrate) is one of the best-known K-beauty ingredients. It is loved mainly for its hydrating, softening care and suits dry or stressed skin well. Brands such as COSRX state that the snails are not harmed during collection. The ingredient is, however, not vegan. More: snail mucin explained.

5. Is Korean skincare suitable for sensitive or blemish-prone skin?

Yes – many Korean products are made precisely for these skin types. Look for calming ingredients such as centella asiatica (cica), heartleaf and panthenol, and for fragrance-free formulas. Introduce new products one at a time and patch-test first. Related: Korean skincare for sensitive skin and Niacinamide or centella for blemishes.

6. Can I combine K-beauty with Western products like retinol?

Yes. Korean hydrating care pairs well with strong actives like retinol because it supports the skin with moisture. Important: use retinol only in the evening, don't combine it with AHA/BHA exfoliants on the same night, increase slowly and always wear sunscreen in the morning. More in our guide to combining actives.

7. What is the difference between Korean and Western skincare?

Western skincare often relies on a few strong products to tackle a specific concern quickly. Korean skincare is more preventive: lots of hydration, gentle formulas, light textures in several layers and daily sunscreen. Neither is simply "better" – many people now combine both.

8. What does PA++++ mean on Korean sunscreen?

SPF describes protection against UVB rays (sunburn). PA ("Protection Grade of UVA") shows protection against UVA rays, which contribute to skin ageing. The more plus signs, the higher the UVA protection:

  • PA+ – low UVA protection
  • PA++ – moderate UVA protection
  • PA+++ – high UVA protection
  • PA++++ – very high UVA protection (highest level)
